The first in the country! Grid connected power generation of solid-state hydrogen storage projects

At the end of last month, China realized the grid connection of solid hydrogen power generation for the first time. According to the report of CCTV News on March 25, as a national key research and development project, the grid connection technology of solid hydrogen power generation was first realized in Guangzhou and Kunming, which is the first time that photovoltaic power generation was made into solid hydrogen energy and applied to power system in China. This device utilizes photovoltaic power generation to produce hydrogen and stores it in a solid-state manner, thereby achieving high-density energy storage. Flexible conversion between "green electricity" and "green hydrogen"! The biggest advantage of solid hydrogen storage is that it is simple and efficient. Solid hydrogen storage technology combines hydrogen with hydrogen storage materials through physical or chemical means to achieve hydrogen storage. In terms of material classification, there are metal alloys, carbon materials, etc. Metal hydride alloys can be subdivided into rare earth series, titanium iron/manganese series, vanadium series and magnesium series. Advantages: High volumetric hydrogen storage rate, high safety performance, high energy efficiency, and low cost of hydrogen refueling stations. Disadvantages:


Most materials have low mass density, while magnesium series have high mass density. However, hydrogen release requires a large amount of heat and requires high requirements for heat exchange devices. The previous hydrogen storage methods were either gaseous or liquid, and there was a risk of high gas pressure, flammability, and explosiveness in gaseous hydrogen storage. Liquid hydrogen storage requires a temperature below -250 ℃, which is extremely expensive. This hydrogen energy development project, led and implemented by China Southern Power Grid Corporation, has successfully solved the technical bottleneck of storing hydrogen in solid form at room temperature. Its principle is to "attract" hydrogen atoms into metal voids through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and new alloy materials, achieving storage purposes. At this point, if the ambient temperature of the alloy is raised, hydrogen gas will be released and converted into electrical energy through fuel cells, which can be integrated into the power grid. And through devices similar to 'refueling stations', hydrogen can be directly added to new energy vehicles. Zheng Xin, a senior researcher at Yunnan Electric Power Research Institute of China Southern Power Grid, introduced that these seven rectangular devices for storing hydrogen can store 200 cubic meters of hydrogen, and if they were replaced with ordinary commonly used three megapascals of hydrogen storage tanks, the volume would increase by 20 times. By integrating the production, storage, power generation, and hydrogenation of hydrogen energy, flexible conversion between "green electricity" and "green hydrogen" is achieved, effectively solving the problem of randomness and strong seasonal fluctuations in new energy power generation. 


The 165 kilograms of hydrogen energy stored in the entire project can sustain a stable output of 23 hours and generate 2300 kilowatt hours of power during peak electricity consumption, which will promote the large-scale stable consumption of clean energy and accelerate the construction of new power systems. At present, high-density safe storage and transportation of hydrogen has become a major bottleneck issue in the hydrogen energy industry chain, which is crucial for the commercial operation of hydrogen energy. The use of solid-state hydrogen storage can significantly increase the volume hydrogen storage density and improve the safety of hydrogen storage and transportation. Gaogong Hydrogen Power stated that with the continuous exploration of solid-state hydrogen storage in research and application by hydrogen energy enterprises, solid-state hydrogen storage will occupy an important position in the future diversified hydrogen energy storage and transportation system. 


PART.02 | Solid state hydrogen storage business concept stocks have shown good growth. There are a total of 8 stocks in the A-share market with solid state hydrogen storage business. Since 2023, concept stocks have shown good growth, with an average increase of 5.68%. Yong'an Bank has surged by 30.76%, while Yunhai Metal has risen by 12.89%. Only Xiamen Tungsten Xinneng and Hongda Xingye's stock prices fell. In terms of specific business, Yunhai Metal stated that the company's magnesium based hydrogen storage material technology is still in the research and development stage and will be mass-produced when the technology matures. As a reversible "storage" medium for hydrogen, this material has excellent hydrogen absorption and desorption performance, as well as the advantages of long-term cycling without dynamic attenuation and capacity loss. It can achieve large capacity solid-state hydrogen storage and long-distance transportation at room temperature and pressure. 


Yong'anxing recently replied on the interactive platform that the company's hydrogen rod is an energy storage equipment that uses low-pressure solid-state hydrogen storage technology, which is not only safe but also has a high hydrogen storage density. The hydrogen rod has undergone experiments such as burning, high-altitude throwing, and impact, and has strong safety. Shengyuan Environmental Protection stated that the company is currently increasing its research and development investment in the field of new energy, and conducting research and development of solid-state hydrogen storage materials. Xiongtao Co., Ltd. stated that one of the three basic business sectors of Shanghai Hydrogen Feng Energy Technology Co., Ltd., which is a shareholder, is magnesium based solid hydrogen storage equipment. Currently, the production line of the magnesium alloy high-density hydrogen storage technology industrialization project has been completed, put into operation, and tested. Hengdian Dongci is also indirectly related to the concept by participating in Antai Chuangming. Antai Chuangming has been developing solid-state hydrogen storage materials and application technologies, but the company's investment proportion is not significant. As of now, some concept stocks have released performance related reports for 2022. According to annual report data or forecast lower limit statistics, the net profit growth rates of Xiamen Tungsten New Energy and Hengdian Dongci were 93.66% and 48.98% respectively year-on-year. In terms of funding, many solid-state hydrogen storage concept stocks have been favored by Beishang Capital since 2023. 


Compared to their holdings at the end of 2022, the number of shares held by Xiamen Tungsten New Energy, Houpu Shares, Hengdian Dongci, and Hongda Xingye Beishang Fund has doubled, with an increase of 23.27 times, 6.88 times, 1.39 times, and 1.04 times, respectively. According to the latest holdings, Hengdian Dongci, Hongda Xingye, Yunhai Metal, and Xiongtao Group's Beishang Fund hold the top shares, with 75.3763 million shares, 39.3996 million shares, 5.2261 million shares, and 2.9278 million shares, respectively. Xiamen Tungsten Xinneng and Houpu Co., Ltd. have the highest increase in their holdings, but the holdings of Beishang Capital are not high, with 373100 shares and 241200 shares respectively.
