Tesla Cybercab debuts on September 3—can it unlock the trillion-yuan mobility market?

Tesla is accelerating the development of a taxi designed specifically for autonomous driving—the Cybercab.


Tesla has announced on social media that it will hold a Cybercab launch event in Austin, Texas, USA, on September 3 local time. The biggest feature of this car is the complete removal of the steering wheel and brake pedals, relying entirely on the autonomous driving system. It is Tesla's first model specifically designed for driverless taxis (Robotaxi).


Currently, Tesla's driverless taxi service in Austin mainly uses modified Model Ys. After the launch of Cybercab, it is expected to join Austin's driverless taxi fleet and gradually transform the existing operating model.


According to Tesla's plan, Cybercab's launch will proceed in two steps: first, it will open ride-hailing services to internal employees on public roads, then test for a few days before officially opening it to the public.

| Preparations are basically complete before the road launch, but regulatory approval remains uncertain

Before the official launch, Tesla had already made several preparations.


As early as June this year, Cybercab began testing on public roads in many parts of the United States, including Austin. By July, Tesla began having employees test drive on private roads in the Austin campus and collecting feedback—largely consistent with the process before Robotaxi launched last year.


Meanwhile, Tesla recently conducted specialized training for emergency responders in Austin, teaching them how to properly handle and move the vehicle in emergencies.


Because Cybercab has completely eliminated the steering wheel and brake pedals, if the autonomous driving system fails, passengers inside cannot take over manually as in traditional vehicles. In response, Tesla stated that the company has a remote operator who can remotely intervene and control the vehicle in emergencies.


However, this also raises a key regulatory issue. For reference, Amazon's Zoox only received approval from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in July this year, allowing commercial passenger rides using vehicles without steering wheels or pedals, which until then could only offer free test rides. It is still unclear whether Tesla has obtained similar regulatory approvals, nor whether Cybercab will directly begin paid operations after its launch.

|Cybercab and Model Y fleet: Parallel at first, then gradually replacing each other

Currently, Tesla's driverless taxi service in Austin mainly relies on a modified Model Y—equipped with self-cleaning cameras and a second communication unit. According to data from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, Tesla has registered 186 Model Y vehicles locally for Robotaxi operations.


In contrast, Cybercab was designed from the start for driverless taxis, requiring no additional modifications and theoretically significantly reducing operational complexity.


So, what will happen to the existing Model Y fleet after the Cybercab goes live? According to the current operational plan, after Cybercab's release, it will first integrate with the existing Robotaxi platform and initially operate alongside the Model Y fleet. Tesla has also intended to slow the pace of Model Y joining the Robotaxi fleet to make room for Cybercab deployment, and will gradually replace Model Y with Cybercab in the future.


However, large-scale replacement is still difficult to achieve in the short term. Tesla began producing the Cybercab in Texas last month, but Musk made it clear at the July earnings call that mass production will not be reached within 2026. The reason is that Cybercab uses a brand-new platform, and Tesla needs to accumulate enough dedicated driving data before further expanding its deployment. It is expected that Cybercab will not truly achieve mass production and large-scale operations until after 2027.

Kingtech's Perspective | The press conference is a "narrative catalyst," not a "performance realization point"

The release of Cybercab will undoubtedly reignite market imagination for Tesla's Robotaxi business. But investors must clearly recognize that between the "press conference" and "large-scale profitability," there are multiple hurdles such as capacity ramp-up, regulatory approvals, and data accumulation.


Musk has clearly stated that large-scale production will not occur within 2026, meaning Cybercab's short-term contribution to Tesla's revenue is almost negligible. It is more like a "ticket to the future" than a "cash cow" of the present.


The autonomous driving industry chain is the definite beneficiary

Rather than betting on Cybercab's own commercialization pace, it's better to focus on the industry chain behind it. Mass production of Cybercab will directly drive demand for upstream components such as drive-by-wire chassis, pure vision perception modules, and remote monitoring systems.


At the same time, as Tesla's Robotaxi fleet expands, demand for supporting services such as charging infrastructure, high-precision map data services, and vehicle operation and maintenance platforms will also grow in tandem. These "shoveler sellers" are the most certain beneficiaries of this wave of autonomous driving.


Seize the opportunity to position yourself amid the "expectation gap."

For Tesla's investment judgment, it is recommended to closely pay attention to three indicators:

First, the pace and performance of the FSD V15 version, which JPMorgan believes will be a key trigger for large-scale team expansion; second, Cybercab's actual operational data in Austin (such as daily order volume and operating costs per mile), which will directly verify the feasibility of its business model; Third, progress in regulatory approvals, especially NHTSA's final stance on commercial passenger transport for steering wheelless vehicles.


If these indicators continue to improve, Tesla is expected to complete its valuation restructuring from "electric vehicle manufacturer" to "AI mobility platform," and the current valuation level actually offers an opportunity to "trade time for space."
